Pikmin 4 Night Expedition Guide — Glow Pikmin & Defense

Unlock night expeditions, grow Glow Pikmin, protect Lumiknolls, and earn glow sap without guessing wave counts or hidden fail states.

What are night expeditions?

Night expeditions are standalone defense missions on surface areas you already visited during the day. Pikipedia describes them as tower-defense scenarios: frenzied nocturnal creatures target Lumiknolls, and you must keep those mounds alive until dawn or eliminate every enemy on the map.

Regular Pikmin stay home because they are diurnal. Instead you command Glow Pikmin, born when glow pellets reach a Lumiknoll or Tricknoll (three pellets create one Glow Pikmin per Pikipedia). Oatchi still accompanies you and can guard a Lumiknoll on command once that ability unlocks through training.

Glow sap from successful nights becomes medicine that cures leaflings—a step separate from normal castaway rescues. If you are mapping rescue progress, keep the castaway locations index open beside this guide.

How do you unlock and start them?

Two story gates must clear first (Pikipedia, Night expedition article):

  1. Rescue Yonny, the Rescue Corps doctor (Pikipedia plot ties him to night-expedition medicine).
  2. Rescue at least one leafling so Yonny has a patient who needs glow sap.

After both, visit the Rescue Command Post and talk to Yonny instead of prepping a daytime landing with Collin. You pick a landing base inside an area you already explored; unvisited areas stay off the menu.

Tutorial routing is scripted: the first two night expeditions must occur on Sun-Speckled Terrace at the Ancient Arches and Rugged Scaffold bases. After that, you may choose any unlocked base in any order, viewing danger ratings and Yonny’s notes in the selection list.

Nintendo Life’s preview of the first night matches this flow: return to Sun-Speckled Terrace, meet Glow Pikmin at a Lumiknoll, haul glowing pellets, and survive until dawn.

What happens during a night run?

Step-by-step Pikmin 4 night expedition guide from Yonny briefing through glow sap rewards at sunrise.

Setup and shared world state

You land at the chosen base beside a Lumiknoll that spews starting Glow Pikmin (counts vary by base; Pikipedia lists 10–50 starters depending on location). Carriable objects from daytime vanish, and you cannot enter caves, Dandori Challenges, or Dandori Battles.

Obstacles you cleared during the day stay cleared at night, and blocked routes can prevent enemies from reaching Lumiknolls even if those enemies are awake. Use daytime runs to open paths and remove hazards before expecting an easy night.

Grow your Glow squad

Send Glow Pikmin to glow pellets on the map. Pellets delivered to Lumiknolls or activated Tricknolls spawn more Glow Pikmin. Idle Glow Pikmin teleport to your active leader, which keeps defense mobile.

Hold the charge input to form a Glowmob—Glow Pikmin merge into a ball that stuns enemies on release (Nintendo store: “ball of light so shiny, it can stun enemies”). Oatchi cannot start a Glowmob; his charge input remains Rush.

Survive the frenzy

After calm opening minutes, creatures enter a frenzied state with glowing red eyes and beeline toward Lumiknolls or Tricknolls. Pikipedia states the frenzy spreads across remaining enemies over time; we do not list per-wave counts because the game does not present them as fixed numbered waves in official materials.

You win if dawn arrives with every Lumiknoll intact or if you defeat every enemy before sunrise. A night lasts four minutes plus a 30-second sunrise countdown according to Pikipedia timing notes.

You lose immediately if any Lumiknoll is destroyed—the run ends and you can retry on a later day. Losing a Tricknoll only removes a decoy pellet drop-off.

If every Glow Pikmin is lost, the Lumiknoll respawns five replacements (Pikipedia gameplay section).

Hazards unique to nights

Some maps spawn Smoky Progg eggs that hatch into high-threat enemies; breaking eggs early yields large pellet piles (Pikipedia night article). Gloom from a hatched Smoky Progg can kill Glow Pikmin on contact—prioritize egg breaks when you spot them.

Enemies do not leave corpses, though tougher foes may drop pellet piles when defeated.

What should you prepare during the day?

Checklist for Pikmin 4 night expedition preparation including Yonny unlock and Lumiknoll defense tips.

  • Unlock bases — night menus only show landing sites you already reached in daylight.
  • Clear chokepoints — open walls and ramps so Glow Pikmin can haul pellets quickly.
  • Train Oatchi — guard orders let him circle a Lumiknoll while you gather pellets elsewhere (best Oatchi upgrades helps pick combat skills first).
  • Our tip: daytime Bomb Rock or mine setups mentioned in community guides are optional; we list them only as player practice, not official requirements.

Use the night radar / minimap (highlighted in Pikipedia) to spot frenzied silhouettes behind terrain. Music intensifies when a Lumiknoll takes damage—rotate back even if pellet routes look tempting.

What do you earn—and what carries over?

Outcome Glow sap Glow Seeds Notes
Success, first clear 1 dose per living Lumiknoll Based on squad size (≥1 seed) Yonny administers sap to waiting leaflings next morning
Success, repeat on cleared base None Still awarded Good for farming seeds
Failure None Still awarded Retry another day

Pikipedia notes a 100 Glow Pikmin field cap even if pellet math suggests more. Defeating every enemy is optional for story completion; sunrise survival is enough.

Returning to the beginner guide helps if you still juggle daytime Sparklium gates while Yonny waits for night orders.

What we’ll update

We deliberately omit enemy count tables and pellet-max spreadsheets from Pikipedia’s data mining section to avoid implying fixed wave schedules. If the Switch 2 Edition adds new night bases or changes glow sap pacing (2026-11-12), we will re-verify unlock dialog and rewards within 48 hours of release.

FAQ

How do you unlock night expeditions in Pikmin 4?
Rescue Yonny, cure at least one leafling, then speak to Yonny at the Rescue Command Post to launch a night expedition instead of a normal daytime landing.
Which Pikmin can you use at night?
Only Glow Pikmin join you on night surface expeditions. Regular Pikmin and Onions stay at the Command Post.
How do you fail a night expedition?
If every Lumiknoll is destroyed, the night ends in failure and you must retry on a later day. Partial Tricknoll losses do not automatically fail the run.
What rewards do night expeditions give?
Each surviving Lumiknoll yields one glob of glow sap, which Yonny turns into leafling medicine. You also earn Glow Seeds based on remaining Glow Pikmin, even on failed runs, but repeat clears of already-finished bases do not grant extra glow sap.
How long does a night last?
Pikipedia records a four-minute (240-second) night timer before the 30-second sunrise countdown, separate from the 15-minute surface day clock.
