How to Get All Pikmin Types in Pikmin 4 (9 Types)
Unlock order, Onion locations, and abilities for all nine Pikmin types in Pikmin 4, from Red through Glow, Purple, and White.
How many Pikmin types does Pikmin 4 have?
The official Nintendo store lists nine types with distinct roles: Red, Blue, Yellow, Ice, Glow, Purple, Rock, Winged, and White. Only three of the standard types can be active in a surface area at once; Glow nights replace the whole squad with Glow Pikmin instead.
Pikmin 4 also breaks series tradition by allowing multiple unlock orders. You may meet wild Pikmin inside a cave before you haul that color’s Onion to the Master Onion, but you cannot propagate that color from the Master Onion until its Onion merges.
If you are still setting up your first week, pair this page with the beginner guide for day planning.

What does each Pikmin type do?
Abilities below combine Nintendo’s consumer-facing descriptions with Pikipedia gameplay notes. Wording is ours; numbers like Purple carry strength follow in-game behavior documented on Pikipedia.
| Type | Strength in one line | Onion or source (verified) |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Fire-resistant, high attack power | Red Onion at Rescue Command Post after day-one tutorial (Burrow of Beginnings) |
| Ice | Freezes enemies and water bodies | Wild in Last-Frost Cavern; Ice Onion in Hero’s Hideaway |
| Yellow | Electricity-safe, higher throws, fast diggers | Crackling Cauldron or Industrial Maze on Sun-Speckled Terrace; Yellow Onion can also seed the Master Onion |
| Blue | Swims underwater | Wild in Sun-Speckled Terrace or Blossoming Arcadia; Blue Onion in Serene Shores |
| Rock | Breaks crystals; blunt, high-impact throws | Wild from Kingdom of Beasts (Blossoming Arcadia) onward; Rock Onion in Giant’s Hearth (guarded by Sovereign Bulblax) |
| Winged | Flies gaps; strong vs aerial foes | Wild in Below-Grade Discotheque (Serene Shores); Winged Onion deep in Primordial Thicket |
| Glow | Night-only; elemental resist; Glowmob stun | Lumiknolls during night expeditions—no Onion |
| Purple | 10× carry weight, slam stuns | Purple Candypop Buds (often first seen in Engulfed Castle); Purple Onion via Trial of the Sage Leaf final story |
| White | Poison immunity, very fast | White Candypop Buds in Subzero Sauna; White Onion via Trial of the Sage Leaf story 5 |
Red Pikmin
Nintendo markets Reds as the default attackers that ignore fire. In Pikmin 4 they also carry fire starters needed for certain treasures and can extinguish sizzling floor tiles. You unearth their Onion immediately after the tutorial rescue chain.
Ice Pikmin
Nintendo highlights freezing enemies and bodies of water. Ice Pikmin debut in Last-Frost Cavern fighting cold hazards; their Onion is much later in Hero’s Hideaway, so expect to lean on wild Ice sprouts for a while.
Yellow Pikmin
Yellows resist electricity, throw higher, and dig faster per Nintendo. On Sun-Speckled Terrace they appear in Crackling Cauldron or Industrial Maze, typically after Ice in many routes but not required to be third.
Blue Pikmin
Blues survive underwater transport and combat. You may spot wild Blues in early areas, yet the Blue Onion itself rests in Serene Shores until you retrieve and merge it.
Rock Pikmin
Rock Pikmin smash crystals and tolerate crush attacks on soft ground. Pikipedia lists the earliest wild Rocks in Kingdom of Beasts (second sublevel) on Blossoming Arcadia. The Rock Onion sits in Giant’s Hearth behind a Sovereign Bulblax fight.
Winged Pikmin
Winged Pikmin ferry items over gaps and reach flying enemies. Wild Winged appear in Below-Grade Discotheque (Serene Shores), while their Onion is near the end of Primordial Thicket.
Glow Pikmin
Glow Pikmin thrive in darkness, fuse into a Glowmob stun, and spawn from glow pellets (three pellets → one Pikmin) at Lumiknolls. They are discovered on your first night expedition after rescuing Yonny. See the dedicated night expedition guide for combat flow.
Purple Pikmin
Purples combine extreme carry strength with slam attacks. Until you earn their Onion, convert other types with Purple Candypop Buds in caves such as Engulfed Castle. The Purple Onion unlocks by completing the final story of Trial of the Sage Leaf and merging it at the Master Onion.
White Pikmin
Whites resist poison and move quickly. Create them with White Candypop Buds in Subzero Sauna until the fifth Trial of the Sage Leaf story yields the White Onion.

What order should you pursue types?
Because the game allows flexible routing, think in priority tiers instead of a single route:
- Red + Ice + Yellow — cover fire, ice, and electricity on Sun-Speckled Terrace and Blossoming Arcadia.
- Blue — merge the Serene Shores Onion before large water treasures.
- Rock + Winged — unlock when Arcadia and Shores caves demand crystal walls or aerial paths.
- Glow — mandatory for leafling medicine once Yonny joins.
- Purple + White — endgame caves, heavy lifts, and poison zones; plan Trial of the Sage Leaf sessions.

Sparklium gates still control area access, so you may visit a type’s region before you are strong enough to haul its Onion. Track treasure milestones on the treasure list by area page when planning detours.
Training Oatchi helps secure Rock and Winged Onion fights; budget materials using best Oatchi upgrades.

What we’ll update
Decor Pikmin from the November 2025 free update are cosmetic collectibles tied to Pikmin Bloom transfers, not a tenth combat type. We will add a short Decor note if Nintendo expands their in-story role in the Switch 2 Edition (2026-11-12).
